When placing a bid the amount you enter is the maximum you are willing to pay for that item. The system will automatically place your bid at the next increment from the current bid and the system will continue to bid for you if you put a higher maximum. For example, Joe enters $12 for a item that has a $3 bid increment, and another user placed a new bid of $6, Joe will automatically place a bid of $6+$3=$9, this will continue for Joe until the $12 maximum bid is reached then Joe will be knocked out of the bidding unless he increases his maximum bid again. The current highest bidder is Joe with $9.
